Soul Ecstasy

Let the light inside of me shine

Soul Ecstasy is the seventh album from GRAMMY®-winning artist Chandrika Tandon. Building on her signature fusion of her classical Indian training, western instrumentation, and ancient Vedic wisdom, the album’s eight tracks interpret a rich tradition of music for global listeners and seekers of inner bliss.

The creation of this album was, for me, a journey to deepen my connection to the divine. My hope is that it will also be a light to you on your own journey.

Traditional Indian classical music at its highest form aims to reach the divine, and that has been the essence of my multi-decade long training in this challenging and sublime artform. I have drawn from this musical heritage using simple religious texts—it is my goal to make this complex tradition of music more accessible so that everyone may experience the profound benefits that have enriched my own life.

I recorded this eight-song collection in New York City and India alongside my longtime collaborator, the sarod maestro Tejendra Majumdar. With the highest production standards, the album features 75 musicians including more than 25 traditional Indian instruments—the sarangi, shehnai, sitar, harmonium, pakhawaj, esraj, bansuri, sarod, veena, and tabla—and 16 classical singers. We have showcased complex modes and emotions of 15 ragas (scales) and chalans (movements) set to 6-, 7-, 8-, 10-, and 16-beat talas (rhythm cycle).

Within this sophisticated classical musical framework, I have used the words Rama and Krishna. Ra means light, Ma means within me—Rama is a prayer to let the light within all of us shine. Kri means attraction, may we all be attracted to the divine.

This is the prayer and promise of Soul Ecstasy.

Lyrics

  • This lead track is a true song of the divine, honoring the different elements of Rama and Krishna. Here, I used the harmonic minor Kiravani scale, which is widely used in Spanish music. It only seemed fitting to bring in the guitar, played in both the Indian and Spanish styles, with the paso doble beat. The result is a rich layering of Eastern and Western influences with a Latin flavor.

  • Call of the Divine was inspired by some of my most cherished childhood memories, waking up to the sounds of large crowds crying out “Govinda” (Protector of the Earth) as they walked the streets in the early mornings. I read the lyrics in a poetry book — that same night, this long piece composed itself. I condensed a long traditional song of 19 verses and created the tunes in a medley of 4 ragas (Bhoopali, Nat Bhairav, Brindavani, Shankara) with an 8-beat Keherwa Taal. The extraordinary percussion masters of India created multiple subdivisions of these 8-beat cycles with very complex rhythm patterns.

  • The Beatles popularized a basic version of an iconic tune of Hare Rama, Hare Krishna. In Chorus of Joy, I took the beloved first line and moved into additional lyrics in the beautiful Yamani Bilawal raga. I joined elements from a kirtan from my childhood in yaman and a samba in bilawal with the eight-syllable protection mantra Om Na Mo Na Ra Ya Na Ya.

  • In ancient days, people sang all the time, calling out to the Divine using many names. They sang while walking to work, they sang while they worked the fields, plowing, reaping, and during all their everyday tasks. Harvest Melody starts with a very traditional raga Bhairav and moves into Purya Dhanasri and Pilu. I used a non-traditional 10-beat cycle, or jhap taal, to create a hypnotic beat.

  • Marwa is a beautiful, yet, complex raga as it evokes restlessness before resolution. It is also difficult to sing and is traditionally part of advanced training as the microtones have to be very precise. I was inspired to infuse Hare Rama, Hare Krishna with the feel of the Sufi singers using this heavy raga, starting with the traditional 8-beat cycle. In the second section, I changed the tempo and beat to a 7-cycle tala and composed a piece in raga Bhatiyar — an allied raga. In the last section, the whole song goes into an ecstatic trance with a higher tempo as ecstasy builds.

  • Khamaj is a playful and bright raga that is common in both South and North India. This composition is intended to bring out the spirit of love for the divine — joyous, playful, sparkling love. To capture this essence, I added liberal ornamentation in the notes.

  • Jogkauns is a raga that is rarely sung because it has a complex chalan, or path of the scales. Composing in this raga is especially challenging. In this track, we used a lilting 6-beat lullaby-like rhythm to guide listeners through a different dynamic and soundscape. Here, we have a live string orchestra on the recording. Hence, the play on words for the title, Heartstrings.

  • The Aarti is traditionally a prayer sung at the end of every celebration, festival or gathering. It is an offering of the light within us to a much bigger light . . . and also expresses gratitude. In Glory Rising I used a scale called Todi — with a lot of flat notes to reinterpret this traditional prayer. We also use konnakol — the spoken word of traditional Indian drums — to scat around some rhythms. This track, fittingly, closes the album as a soothing transition to everyday life after an intense emotional experience of ecstasy.

To compose Chorus of Joy, I combined the raga elements from it with a kirtan from my childhood, a samba piece, and the eight-syllable word Om Na Mo Na Ra Ya Na Ya. I originally composed this in 1999, but it never left me. I am so happy finally to bring it to life in this album.

  • In the ancient days, people sang at all times. They sang while walking to work, they sang while they worked the fields, plowing, reaping, and so on. They sang songs of the Divine, and that was the inspiration for this song. I took a very traditional tune and created a medley with two other ragas. Typically, these lilting kinds of songs are done in seven six beats, but I went with ten beats here, which makes it much more interesting to me.

  • Marwa is as beautiful as it is difficult to sing. I was inspired to infuse Hare Rama, Hare Krishna with the feel of the Sufi singers using this heavy raga. Of course, I added a medley of some other classical elements and changed the 8-beat to a 7-beat, just to vary the rhythms in different parts.

  • Khamaj is a playful and bright raga that is common in both South and North India. This composition is intended to bring out the spirit of love for the divine. It’s a joyous love. It’s a sparkling love. To capture this essence, I sped up the usual tempo just a little, but I added liberal ornamentation in the notes. It’s been beautifully supplemented by Grammy-winner Rakesh Chaurasia playing his magnificent flute.

  • Glory Rising is a beautiful song that uses konnakol (the spoken word) and traditional Indian drums to express the rhythm around simple Hindi verses. This track, fittingly, closes the album, as it captures the essence of the Aarti, which is the closing of a prayer ceremony. During an Aarti, you light lamps and float them in the river while also offering flowers to the divine. This is a soothing way to come back to your everyday life after having gone through so many emotions and engaging with divinity. It is an offering of prayers and gratitude.

Normally, when you are in a trance or inner space, there is a whole cycle of emotions that you experience, exposing the tender sections of yourself.
